The Mars rover Curiosity landing was not your everyday space mission. The mission had to be perfected to the millimeter for the craft to land safely from space.

And to make matters worse, NASA engineers had a planned loss of contact with the craft for seven long minutes.

So it’s no surprise the NASA engineers, scientists, and nerds at the California Institute of Technology celebrated like it was 1999 when they got word the mission was a success and Curiosity touched down safely.
