Back in the 80’s, Johnny Carson was the literal king of late night television. Nearly the entire nation would watch his nightly program.
One night, the concert pianist scheduled to perform couldn’t make it, so Johnny asked the audience if anyone played the piano.
Pianist David Tolley was the lucky audience member placed onstage. In his full on 80’s style Nike t-shirt tucked in to his skinny jeans and flip flops.
Johnny even says, “Obviously this was not set up, because obviously David would not dress this way… if he knew he was going to be on a big television show with a national audience.”
But David proved the timeless phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. He played Memory from Cats, and blew the audience away.
Playing the piano pedals with flip flops was of course the cherry on top.
The vintage video was posted online by David himself last Halloween, but the clip has gone viral this weekend after appearing on Reddit.
