Today, most of people don’t even think about the luxury we take for granted of popping a frozen pizza into the oven from the home freezer.

But of course, life wasn’t always so simple. For centuries, humans have been trying to preserve food for later, but, as Minute Earth rightfully points out, the most common methods, such as salting or smoking, aren’t always the most healthful.

It wasn’t until the the turn of the 20th century that American entrepreneur Clarence Birdseye–as in Birdseye frozen foods–discovered flash freezing techniques from the native Inuit people in Arctic Canada that frozen foods became so ubiquitous in our modern world.
