Every child and adult knows that superheroes wear their underwear on the outside.

But why?

You would think someone with superhuman strength and intelligence would know how to get dressed.

Julius Schwartz, who was one of the first DC Comics editors including for Superman, explains that the first superheroes were actually modeled after wrestlers and circus performers of the era who often wore tiny shorts over their tights. 

So it’s technically not underwear.
