January 25, 2014 - 12:22 amHank, an article in the Guardian talks about how, in Britain, “Ginger” is often used as a term of approbation. People on the street and particularly in schools are insulted, accosted, and sometimes assaulted just for being “gingers”. We Norteamericanos don’t have any of those pejorative associations, but a woman just wrote into the Guardian to ask them to stop using the term. The Australian Tim Minchin has a song about “only a Ginger can call a Ginger Ginger”, which plays it up as a big controversy: I’d thought it was all a joke, but apparently it’s taken quite seriously in other parts of the former British empire. Just thought you should know. thanks, howard patterson
